Maritime Archaeology Surveying Techniques

Divers on boat in oceanThe MAST field school is offered to university students during the summers, and is supported by MOP and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This intensive course provides training in maritime archaeology surveying techniques through hands-on diving expeditions to local plane- and shipwrecks.

Charting a Course to MAST

For students interested in participating in MAST, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Recreational SCUBA certification (NAUI, PADI, YMCA, etc.)
  2. University of Hawaiʻi Scientific Diver Authorization.For MAST, all students are required to become fully authorized, not a DIT like with QUEST.  Depending on the sites, there may be a depth authorization requirement.Follow the flow chart provided by the Diving Safety Office, which states:
    • Fill out Scientific Diver application
    • Schedule a diving physical at Straub Clinic, print and take medical form with you and have them send results to the UH Diving Safety Program
    • Schedule a swim test, pool checkout dive, and ocean checkout dive with Assistant Diving Safety Officer (Liv Wheeler) at (808) 956-6617 or email
    • First Aid/CPR/O2, Rescue Training, plus twelve (12) logged dives
  3. Apply to MAST by early March (your campus MOP Coordinator will have details)
  4. Upon acceptance, students must request a Letter of Reciprocity from the UH Diving Safetly Officer, David Pence to participate
  5. Costs:
    • One to two (1-2) credits (depending on need)
    • Lab fee ($550)
    • Round trip airfare (~$180)
    • SCUBA gear
    • Miscellaneous camping and school items
