Degree Programs

Students have the opportunity to choose from a number of strong programs at the University of Hawai’i which allow them to focus on Japan. The following list is not exhaustive but highlights the most common fields and degrees of study. Please click on the links for more information on respective department and program.

Of particular interest to many students interested in Japan is the Asian Studies Program, which offers a multidisciplinary curriculum, and the Japanese language and literature curricula in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.


Extracurricular activities

  • UHM Japanese Culture Club
    • Japanese Culture Club is an organization that promotes Japanese culture to the students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Our goal is to spread and understand Japanese culture. We have done community services, intercultural exchanges with students from Japan, and many social events.
  • Kenjinkai 県人会
    • Kenjinkais are prefectural associations. Local associations include Hokkaido, Yamagata, Fukushima, Yamanashi, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Ehime, Fukuoka, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and Okinawa. See this article on Densho Encyclopedia to learn more about kenjinkai.
