CJS Co-sponsored Seminar with the Department of Religions by Dr. Mark Mullins

The Department of Religions and Ancient Civilizations and the Center for Japanese Studies hosted a talk by Professor Mark Mullins, Director of the Japan Studies Center at the University of Auckland, on December 2, 2024 in Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room).

Professor Mullins shared insights on the topic titled, “Christianity Transplanted and Transformed: The Case of Kagawa Toyohiko and the Friends of Jesus Movement.” Professor Mullins focused on Kagawa Toyohiko, a charismatic leader and social reformer who founded the Friends of Jesus Movement in 1921, and how Kagawa’s vision of Christianity impacted the movement and social transformation. He also shared unique ways in which Japanese individuals engaged with Christianity after its introduction to Japan, leading to the formation of independent and indigenous expressions of faith.
