CJS Plenary, Farewells, and Tea Ceremony at Jakuan

We concluded the Spring 2024 semester with the CJS plenary, a lunch gathering of CJS faculty, affiliate faculty, and Japanese language instructors. We congratulated Dr. Haruko Cook on her retirement following the end of the Spring 2024 semester, and bid Aloha to Dr. Kristi Govella and Dr. Pier Carlo Tommasi, who will be taking on new positions in the UK and New York, respectively. We wish them all the best!

Congratulations and Farewell

Dr. Haruko Cook, Professor of Japanese Language and Linguistics, Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures

Dr. Cook will be retiring at the conclusion of the Spring 2024 semester. Her decades of work advancing the field of Japanese linguistics is remarkable and her presence in Moore Hall will be missed.

Dr. Kristi Govella, Assistant Professor, Department of Asian Studies

Dr. Govella will be taking an Associate Professor position at the University of Oxford in the UK. Her tireless work advancing Japanese studies and Indo-Pacific studies was amazing to witness, and we wish her the best in her new position.

Dr. Pier Carlo Tommasi, Assistant Professor, Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures

Dr. Tommasi who will be taking an Assistant Professor position at Vassar College in New York. His innovative and passionate work supporting East Asian Languages and Literatures was inspiring, and we wish him the best in his new position.

Tea Ceremony at the Jaku’an

Following the plenary, Way of Tea Instructor Akiko Ono Riley and her Way of Tea Club hosted a special tea ceremony at the Jakuan, providing many faculty members their first opportunity to experience the unique ambiance and exceptional hospitality of the Way of Tea Club.

CJS Faculty, Affiliate Faculty, and Japanese Language Instructors being served tea in a special ceremony held at the Jaku’an following the plenary
