CJS staff and community members joined hands for our semi-annual cleanup of the Ehime Maru Memorial in Kaka’ako Waterfront Park.

Erected in 2002, the memorial commemorates the lives of four Japanese students, two teachers, and three crew lost in the tragic February 2001 collision between the USS Greeneville and the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishery high-school training ship from Ehime Prefecture.

Community members worked together to tend to the mikan trees from Ehime Prefecture, and cleaned the nine granite blocks that make up the memorial, each block representing the soul of a life lost, and the original anchor from the vessel.

A memorial service is held every February to honor the lives lost and bring comfort to their families and those in attendance.
