2024 Indo-Pacific Affairs Internship Award Winners

With the support of Congressional funding, the Center for Indo-Pacific Affairs, the School of Pacific and Asian Studies, the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, and the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa partnered to launch the Indo-Pacific Affairs Internship Program in 2023. This program provides $4,000 stipends to support undergraduate and graduate students at UH Mānoa pursuing unpaid internships related to Indo-Pacific affairs. The award stipends are intended to make valuable professional development opportunities more accessible to undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

For Summer 2024, seven UH Mānoa students have been selected to work with six partner organizations:

Kayla Anandia will be interning with Pacific Forum during Summer 2024. She is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She is interested in maritime affairs, Southeast Asian politics, and climate change, and her senior thesis examined the complexities surrounding maritime disputes for Indonesia’s national sovereignty and ASEAN regional governance.

Haleigh Dilks will be interning with the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies during Summer 2024. She is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She is interested in applying her political science training to real-world issues and learning more about the crucial role that Hawai‘i plays in global relations.

Jeanine Markley will be interning with the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies during Summer 2024. She is a graduate student pursuing an M.A. in Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her interests include international language education and cultural exchange, and she is interested in exploring future careers with the US federal government. She holds an M.M. in Violin Performance from the University of Michigan and a B.M. in Violin Performance from the University of Hartford Hartt School of Music.

Constancio Paranal III will be interning with the Federal Executive Board to support its involvement with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders’ Hawaii and Pacific Islands Regional Network of federal agencies during Summer 2024. He is a graduate student pursuing an L.L.M. with a focus on Cybersecurity and Intellectual Property Law and a Ph.D. in Information Science specializing in Digital Resilience and Social Informatics at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Constancio was born and raised in the Philippines, and he aspires to work at the intersection of equity and justice in technology access and use, and data disaggregation. He holds a J.D. from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from De La Salle University. 

Tess Schwalger will be interning with US Indo-Pacific Command during Summer 2024. She is a graduate student pursuing an M.A. in History at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Her interests include policy in Oceania, security, intelligence, economic resilience, political stability, climate adaptation, and Women, Peace and Security (WPS). She holds a B.A. in History Education and Pacific Island Studies from Brigham Young University–Hawaii.

Adelina Jasmine Saree Reyes Wichep will be interning with the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs during Summer 2024. She is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in Political Science and a Certificate in Law and Society at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Her interests include education, health, climate change, and political issues related to the Federated States of Micronesia. Adelina is from Pohnpei, and she is passionate about serving her community. She holds an A.A. in Liberal Arts from the College of Micronesia-FSM.

Bars Terra Williams will be interning with the Pacific Islands Development Program to support the Festival of Pacific Arts & Cultures (FestPAC) during Summer 2024. She is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in English and Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She is from the states of Aimeliik and Peleliu in the Republic of Palau, and she is excited to build connections with other Pacific Islanders and learn more about the diverse cultures of the region.
