In this presentation, Dr. Ilaria Mazzocco (Senior Fellow with the Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics, Center for Strategic and International Studies) provided an overview of China’s environmental politics, its climate agenda, and the boom in China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry. She also discussed how these issues impact Asia’s environmental security as well as US-China climate cooperation. Her presentation was followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Eric Harwit (Professor of Asian Studies, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa).

Ilaria Mazzocco is a Senior Fellow with the Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. Prior to joining CSIS, she was a Senior Research Associate at the Paulson Institute, where she led research on Chinese climate and energy policy for Macropolo, the institute’s think tank. She holds a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where her dissertation investigated Chinese industrial policy by focusing on electric vehicle promotion efforts and the role of local governments. She also holds master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins SAIS and Central European University, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Bard College.
