Spring 2025

SPAS Conference 2025

Two of our graduate students, Aisheedyuti (Aishee) Roy and Yejun Kweon, both presented at this year’s School of Pacific & Asian Studies (SPAS)  Conference. Aishee’s paper, “Forgetting Trauma: A Study of Generational Amnesia of the Children of East Bengalee Refugees,” received the Writing Excellency Award for Best Paper in South Asia.

Below is a summary of Yejun’s presentation:

I explore how North Korean science fiction reflects environmental anxieties and gender roles through a close reading of Green Seedlings (1988) and Make the Ocean Blue (2004). Drawing on ecofeminist theory, the paper unpacks how climate change discourse is shaped by both state ideology and everyday experience—a fresh look at posthumanism, environmental ethics, and the double burden of women in socialist societies.
