Prof. Chappell Article and Documentary Feature

Warm congratulations to Emeritus Professor David Chappell for the publication of his latest article, “Analystes et activistes : l’essor du nationalisme Kanak en Nouvelle-Calédonie (1963-1977)” Parlement[s]Revue d’histoire politique, Hors-série(HS20), 69-90.

Part of a special issue of Parlement[s] titled “Dominations and Contestations post-coloniales dans les Outre-Mer depuis 1946,” edited by Sylvain Mary, the essay traces the roots of the recent 2024 political protests in New Caledonia through an examination of the rise of Kanak nationalism and liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s.

Prof.  Chappell also appeared in “Les Foulards Rouges, une histoire oubliée” (“The Red Scarves, a Forgotten History”) (2024) a documentary on the young activists who sought to throw off France’s colonial hold in New Caledonia in the late 1960s and 1970s. Written by Christine Della-Maggiora and directed by Dominique Roberjot, the film aired on February 18 and is available on Canal+ and other streaming platforms. For more details, click the link here.
