“The past is a mess. Providence, progress, dialectic, teleology, determinism of various kinds – every attempt to fit it into a simple story has failed. Efforts seem doomed to escape from the constraints of the historian´s own time and circumstances into an objective perspective, or to climb to the cosmic crow´s nest and see our past in a single glance. The lecturer proposes a new approach – comparing humans with other cultural organisms – and argues that the result is a distinctive and surprisingly concise yet comprehensive narrative.”
Felipe Fernández-Armesto is an award-winning historian and author of bestselling books, including 1492; Ideas that Changed the World; and The Americas. He is a regular BBC guest presenter and screenwriter, contributor to Tony award-winning BBC series Armada; and writer for CNN-BBC joint production Millennium: A Thousand Years of History.
