“Queer Dance: PLUR, Ballroom Battles, House Parties, the Circuit, and DJ Culture”
Prof. Mickey Weems, UHM Department of English
12:30 to 2:00 pm
Friday, November 15, 2019
Sakamaki Hall A201

Mickey Weems, Lecturer in the UH Mānoa English Department, discusses his research exploring how queer dance in the U.S. has influenced dance around the world, and its connection to the Gay Liberation Movement in the 1970s. The talk also asks why queer dance is relatively invisible and absent in dance departments. Mr. Weems has completed research on masculinity, religion, and mass violence, as well as a series of biographies. This talk is part of his current research on a genealogy of queer dance.
