Professor Yao is coordinator for the Chinese language program at UH, and assumes responsibility for curriculum planning, teacher training, and the placement and testing of students. His own research focuses on computer-assisted language learning software for Chinese, and computer-adaptive testing of Chinese. His CATRC (Computer-Adaptive Test for Reading Chinese) was funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and is now available for general use. The textbook he co-authored, Integrated Chinese, has been adopted for use at many key institutions. He also writes on the history of Quanzhen Daoism.
