Prior to joining the Dean’s Office in 2024, Andrea Berez-Kroeker was a Professor in the Department of Linguistics since 2011, where she served as Department Chair and Chair of Graduate Studies. Her research and teaching specialization is endangered language documentation, and she has supported Indigenous language activists in Alaska, Canada, Hawaiʻi, Guåhan, and Papua New Guinea. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, as well as the co-edited Open Handbook of Linguistic Data Management (MIT Press, 2022) and Language Contact and Change in the Americas (John Benjamins, 2016). She has been the recipient of over $1.3M in extramural research funding, and in 2019 she was awarded the Early Career Award by the Linguistic Society of America. Prior to her work in Linguistics, Dr. Berez-Kroeker earned an MFA in visual art and taught sculpture and drawing at the university level for several years.
