FAQ
1.1. What is the academic program review, and what is the role of the external review team?
The program review is a comprehensive review of the academic programs in a college. It takes place every 5-7 years to ensure program effectiveness within the context of the disciplinary norms, university policy, and external accreditation standards. The external review team for CALL – which consists of recognized experts in our disciplinary/professional fields – is tasked with identifying program strengths, challenges, and opportunities, and offering specific recommendations to assist programs in their efforts to improve.
1.2. How does the external review team gather information about academic programs under review?
First, the review team reviews the self-study reports prepared by faculty in CALL departments as well as the Dean’s executive summary report. This phase has already started. During the site visit, the review team will also gather information by meeting CALL faculty, students, staff, and deans as well as administrators and support staff at Mānoa. For more information, Program Review (Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence).
ABOUT THE ‘CHAIR’ MEETING
2.1. Who should join the chair meeting from each department?
Department Chair, Associate Chair, Graduate Chair, and Undergraduate Chair.
2.2. If Associate/Graduate/Undergraduate Chairs cannot attend the chair meeting, what should they do?
They can either request a separate meeting for themselves or they can email their thoughts to the review team member.
2.3. Should Department/Associate/Graduate/Undergraduate Chairs join the meeting for faculty?
No. They should not attend their respective faculty meetings. They may attend the chair meeting only.
2.4. Can Chairs/Directors take the reviewers to a different space during their meeting?
Yes, but Chairs/Directors must meet their reviewers and return them to the assigned room according to schedule.
ABOUT THE FACULTY/STUDENT/STAFF MEETINGS
3.1. Do the participants have the option of attending in person or by Zoom?
Yes. Faculty, student, and staff participants have the option of joining their respective meetings in person or by Zoom. The reserved rooms are equipped for HOT (Here-or-There) meetings.
3.2. Should Lecturers attend the faculty meeting?
Yes. Lecturers who are teaching this semester are invited to attend.
3.3. How are faculty, students, and staff invited to their respective meetings?
The Dean’s office staff will send out email invitations and reminders:
– Chairs of former A&H units, CALL advisors, and CALL faculty (from Janet [pinhogol@hawaii.edu]
– Chairs/Directors of former LLL and CALL support staff (from Irene [shigano@hawaii.edu]
– Chairs/Directors of SPAS and CALL undergraduate and graduate students (from Marissa [jingco@hawaii.edu]
However, we ask Department Chairs to encourage their faculty, staff, and students to participate.
3.4. Is there any particular expectation in terms of the number of student participants?
Per the OVPAE, the number of student participants per meeting varies considerably – anywhere from 3 to 30. As a reminder, in order for the focus group sessions to remain anonymous, student participants should NOT be “hand-picked” and there should NOT be any attendance sheet or sign in.
3.5. Should faculty cancel their classes to attend the meeting for faculty?
No. Faculty should not cancel their classes nor should students skip classes because of the program review. The majority of faculty and students in the program do not have time conflicts, and we hope many of them will be able to participate.
3.6 What format will the meetings be in?
The reviewers typically come with their own set of questions that they’ve agreed upon but focus group participants can also come with their own items they’d like to talk about.
