Zachary Silva (B.A., 2020) majored in Japanese and now works as a Network Engineer at a service provider on O‘ahu. During the Spring 2020 Semester, Zachary earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy (Working Fluency), and also was inducted into the Japanese National Honor Society. Zachary developed an interest in programming and IT during the course of his studies, and spent time creating software tools geared towards learners of Japanese. These efforts allowed him to enter the IT workforce despite having a non-technical degree, and he was later told that his GPA, language certifications, and personal projects were a large factor in determining whether he would be a good fit for the company.
David Suh (M.A., 2020) majored in East Asian Languages and Literatures (Korean) and earned a Global Seal of Biliteracy in Korean (Working Fluency). During the 2020 Spring Semester, David taught a Korean 101 language course as a graduate assistant. He wishes to obtain a further degree in linguistics and plans to pursue a career in language teaching.
Jieying Wu (B.A. Second Language Studies & Cert. Japanese 2021) has worked as a multilingual tutor and a digital publishing assistant for UH Press. She is passionate about language acquisition, interpretation and translation, and localization. Jieying earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy (Professional Fluency) in Mandarin Chinese, which inspired her to continue pursuing her goal of becoming a professional interpreter using her multilingual skills. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in SLS at UH-Mānoa, where, she notes, she is dedicated to connecting her knowledge in SLS with other fields, such as computer science or forensic linguistics, because “the combination of language and technology is amazing.”
