CALL Demonstrates Leadership Role in Language Education and Technology

CALL faculty will take center stage at the international conference CALICO 2025, May 27-31, 2025, highlighting the innovation and expertise of our faculty and research centers. Marta González-Lloret (Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas), a globally recognized scholar in language learning and technology, will deliver a keynote address.

Faculty from the Center for Language & Technology and the Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center will lead a hands-on workshop on developing Generative AI chatbots for language learning. This unique event, the Design Studio, integrates relevant CALICO conference presentations to the professional development experience. Designed for Language Flagship directors and instructors from across the country, the workshop will explore how to create and implement AI chatbots to support project-based language learning experiences.

Also as part of the conference, the Tech Center will host the annual LaunchPad competition, where startup companies present innovative products to an informed audience of language technologists. This year’s finalists can be viewed at the LaunchPad website.

Finally, CALICO 2025 will include the editorial board meeting of Language Learning & Technology, one of the most respected journals in the field. The journal is a diamond open-access publication sponsored by CALL’s National Foreign Language Resource Center and whose founding editor is UH Mānoa alumnus Mark Warschauer.
