Excellence in Action
The Impact of Your Gift
Scholarships do more than ease financial burdens — they uplift voices, ignite passions, and help students stay focused on what matters most: learning, creating, and leading. At the College of Arts, Languages & Letters, your support directly impacts students who are using their talents to explore identity, preserve culture, and give back to their communities.
Through these student stories, you’ll see the real-world outcomes of giving — from solo art exhibits to revitalizing the Hawaiian language. Your donation helps shape their journeys and ensures that future generations can continue to thrive through the power of education, culture, and expression.
Finding Her Voice Through Art
As a Studio Art major, Maya Tanaka uses painting to explore themes of identity and migration. Receiving the CALL Visual Arts Scholarship gave her more than financial relief—it offered validation. “It reminded me that my work matters,” Maya shares. With the support, she was able to complete her first solo exhibit and plans to apply to MFA programs after graduation. “This scholarship gave me the confidence to keep creating.”
Preserving Culture, One Word at a Time
Keahi Kanoa, a Hawaiian Language and Literature student, dreams of becoming a kumu to help revitalize ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i. The Mālama ʻIke Scholarship allowed him to focus fully on his studies without needing a second job. “It’s more than a scholarship,” he says. “It’s a commitment to keeping our language alive.” Keahi now leads a weekly Hawaiian language circle and hopes to teach in rural communities after graduation.
