OD2A-C3 Structure and Purpose

The Overdose to Action (OD2A) program is an initiative of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aimed at helping communities respond to the opioid overdose epidemic in the United States.

The program provides technical assistance, resources, and support to help communities implement evidence-based strategies to prevent and respond to opioid overdose. This includes providing training and education to healthcare providers and first responders on overdose prevention and response, as well as supporting the implementation of overdose prevention programs in local communities. The goal of the OD2A program is to reduce overdose deaths and improve the overall health and well-being of communities affected by the opioid epidemic.

The Overdose to Action (OD2A) program C3 (Coordination, Communication, and Collaboration) is a component of the CDC’s OD2A program.

The Hawai’i Department of Health tasked the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health to manage the efforts locally.  It is focused on building and strengthening partnerships between different sectors, organizations, and stakeholders to improve the response to the opioid overdose epidemic. The C3 component aims to promote coordination, communication, and collaboration among different groups working on overdose prevention and response efforts at the local, state, and national levels. This includes working with community-based organizations, healthcare providers, first responders, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to identify gaps in the response to the opioid epidemic and develop strategies to address those gaps. The goal of the C3 component is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of overdose prevention and response efforts and ultimately reduce the number of overdose deaths in the United States.

OD2A: Overdose Data to Action

The Overdose Data to Action initiative is housed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention organization who supports state, territorial, county, and city health departments in obtaining high-quality, comprehensive, and timely data on overdose morbidity and mortality. With this data, its intentions are to inform prevention and response efforts towards communities impacted by drug overdoses.

Overdose Prevention

Overdose Prevention resources are housed by the CDC and provides information on the best ways to prevent opioid overdose deaths by teaching strategies to  improve opioid prescribing, reduce exposure to opioids, prevent misuse, and treat opioid use disorder.
