Pizza with Professionals Spring 2018 Recap

Closing out the Spring 2018 semester..

Thank you to all of the students who have attended our events this semester. We hope see new and returning  students in the Fall 2018 semester.

Here is a recap of  our Pizza with Professionals event!

First we heard from Aubrey Thomas. As a recent graduate from UHM, she admits the path to the professional sector was not always clear. Prior to exploratory course at UHM, Aubrey was set on pursuing a law degree. Honors sociology struck her interest with the combination of introspection about the world and contemporary issues, changing the trajectory of her career goals. Aubrey decided that she wanted to find a career with an organization that had a mission based purpose. Using her connections acquired in school, Aubrey found a job at Girl Scouts of Hawaii as a Fund Development Coordinator. Aubrey stresses the importance of understanding there is no substitute for hard work. Students pave their own path and ultimately decide how hard they will work to achieve higher.

Lana, also a recent graduate from UHM, shared about her experience in the Shidler College of Business and the value of being involved on campus. Her goal, while in school, was to diversify her courses in order to be a good candidate on the job market. This lead to a double major in Management Information Systems and Marketing. Though Lana did not participate in an internship during her time at UHM, she believes that an internship can be one of the most valuable learning opportunities as a student. Internships are an opportunity to learn about the real world. She encourages students to become involved with RIOs to diversify their network because your peers will become major resources in the future.

Lastly, Derek focussed on how students can use their time at UHM to practice who they aspire to be, personal or professional. Derek encourages students to develop and understanding for their joy and passion because that is the foundation for having a job and producing your best work. Additionally, the process of finding a job is about portraying your passion to others. Derek wants students to perfect their craft because “one sharp knife, is better than 20 dull knives.” Spend your time at UHM wisely so you can hone in on that one skill that stands above the rest.
