Master of Public Health students, Angel Lynn Talana and Taylor Ronquillo have created a COVID-19 Resource Guide and Volunteer Opportunities Guide as part of their special practicum. This resource guide includes information about COVID-19 parenting resources, childcare services, food support, financial support, and more. They also compiled a volunteer list for those who wish to help communities in need.

These lists will be updated every other week so make sure to check regularly for any updated resources and volunteer opportunities.

PhD-Epidemiology student, Mika Thompson is the lead author of an article "Gene–obesogenic environment interactions on body mass indices for older black and white men and women from the Health and Retirement Study". This study of older adults provides further evidence of genetic contributions to obesity, while also showing that vigorous physical activity, especially in women, may reduce some of the obesogenic consequences of genetic predisposition. Of interest, results were not consistent across black and white participants in this study. The full article is available in the International Journal of Obesity.

Seven BA public health students and one MPH candidate proudly shared their capstone project proposal posters with participants at the 2015 Hawaii Public Health Association Conference held on Friday, October 9th at the Hawaii Convention Center. Graduate Certificate in Global Health Protection and Security

The graduate certificate in global health protection and security (GHPS) prepares students to work with diverse populations in rapidly evolving environments that present both geographical and cultural challenges. Students may elect to participate in the GHPS program in conjunction with a UHM graduate degree program, including public health, to develop the transdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to address contemporary global health challenges that often blur the boundaries of academic disciplines.

Health Policy and Management

The decisions, plans, and actions organizations and governments take to achieve health promotion and care goals are the jurisdiction of health policy and management (HPM). Delivering high quality, cost effective health care and developing policies that leadto health and reduce disparities are complex and dynamic processes that integrate topics from a diversity of disciplines and sub-disciplines including, but not limited to: health administration, economics, evaluation, human rights, ethics, anthropology and sociology, etc.. HPM is a diverse specialization that prepares graduates for health-related work across the health services continuum from policy development, program planning, implementation and management, program and policy evaluation, and health systems leadership to achieve intended health outcomes.

The mission of the HPM graduate program is to promote and protect the public's health through the preparation of graduates for careers leading toward leadership in health services policy and management, and to conduct research and disseminate knowledge that will advance the organization, financing, and delivery of health services. HPM courses are designed to develop students' critical thinking and apply problem-solving skills across the public and private sector to address health challenges in the state of Hawai‘i, the Asia-Pacific region, and around the world.
