Bachelor of Arts

About the Major

The primary objective of the program is to prepare students for future careers in a wide array of exciting career fields within public health. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Health is designed to educate undergraduates interested in public health and/or health profession training in the broad basic concepts in public health education, practice, and research. The primary focus of public health education is to improve health and quality of life through the population-based prevention and treatment of disease and other physical and mental health conditions, through surveillance of cases and the promotion of health behaviors.

Master's Degree Programs

Master of Public Health

Courses of study leading to the master of public health (MPH) are designed to provide individuals with a broad background for professional practice in the field of public health at state, national and international levels.

The Office of Public Health Studies (OPHS) currently offers the MPH degree specializing in epidemiology, health policy and management, Native Hawaiian and Indigenous health, and social and behavioral health sciences.

Master of Public Health - Distance Education

Courses of study leading to the master of public health (MPH) - distance education option are designed to provide individuals from the U.S. and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands with a broad background for professional practice in the field of public health at state, national and international levels. Individuals from diverse professions and backgrounds will benefit from an MPH degree from UH Mānoa to take their careers to the next level. The MPH-DE can be completed in 21 months and classes are offered asynchronously. MPH-DE students must meet the same MPH degree requirements as students enrolled in the campus-based degree pathway.

The Office of Public Health Studies (OPHS) currently offers the MPH degree (Distance Education option) specializing in health policy and management.

Master of Science in Public Health

Courses of study leading to the master of science (MS) degree are designed primarily to provide students with a research-oriented education in a specialty area within the broad field of public health.

Doctoral Degree Programs

PhD in Epidemiology

Candidates who successfully complete the doctoral program in epidemiology will be prepared to teach in academic and other settings, conduct independent and collaborative epidemiologic research, and provide consultative services to academic, not-for-profit, governmental, and private organizations. 

PhD in Public Health

The PhD in Public Health focuses on community-based and translational research. It prepares students to lead programs, and conduct independent investigations addressing public health topics relevant to culturally diverse groups, with an emphasis on those in the state of Hawai‘i and the Asia-Pacific region.
