UHM policy dictates that the faculty and students of UHM are provided consistent and equitable treatment in resolving disputes arising from the academic relationship between faculty and student(s). The applicability of this policy is limited to those issues directly associated and concomitant with the faculty member’s responsibilities as a teacher and the students’ responsibilities as a learner.

For academic grievance situations unique to graduate students, such as grievances involving specific graduate program requirements (including adequate academic progress), qualifying and comprehensive exams, formation and composition of the thesis or dissertation committee, final defense of the thesis or dissertation, and infringement of intellectual property.

A Graduate Assistant (GA) who feels he or she has been treated unfairly by a supervisor may initiate a grievance within six months of the occurrence of the conflict. Before filing a formal grievance, the GA must make a good faith effort to resolve the conflict informally with the supervisor.

The UHM housing conduct system exists to ensure education, consultation, and support to residents of student housing communities regarding due process protections and responding to alleged violations of the University and/or Student Housing Services policies.

The UHM Ombuds Office provides confidential, impartial, informal assistance to faculty, staff and students on topics such as harassment or discrimination, violations of UHM policy, workplace disputes, academic freedom, ethical dilemmas, and threats or retaliation.
