Student Scholarships and Grants

The Center for Philippine Studies (CPS) offers a number of grants for UH students dealing with topical research regarding the Philippines or Filipinos. Applicants from other institutions or countries are not eligible.

A bird’s eye view of each of these endowments is found in CPS Scholarships. Details are provided in the above listing.

Only UH student applicants on good standing can apply for one grant at a time and is limited by the maximum amount stipulated in each grant.  

Foreign students and those from other institutions need not apply.

Also, please note that CPS does not fund or reimburse projects that are already done, for example seminars attended prior to the application.  Although there are deadlines, all application materials must be submitted at least 30 days before the event or departure in the case of travel.

General Guidelines:

  1. A cover letter explaining the kind of grant the applicant is seeking (ex. Research proposal, conference travel, or publication support)
  2. For conference travel grants only
  3. a. A letter explaining the significance of the conference and why applicant’s attendance is important
  4. b. One to two academic reference letters
  5. c. Abstract and acceptance to the conference.
  6. A writing sample (10-30 pages total)
  7. Detailed Timeline and budget of conference or research project
  8. Grant recipients only must submit a report about how they used the award at the end of the grant year and share their research findings in a lecture/talk for the CPS Colloquium Series.
  9. Letter of acceptance to the conference
  10. Abstract of accepted presentation

Incomplete application materials will not be considered. Applicants are advised to contact the CPS directors at cpsdir@hawaii.edu before submitting their application.

Deadline: April 2 (or first Monday after Spring Break). Extended to April 30, 2024.
