About the Speaker: Award-winning Filipino author Gina Apostol will read from her latest novel La Tercera and talk about how researching and exploring family history opened links to Philippine revolutionary history and the anti-colonial legacy of Rizal, the Filipino-American War, intergenerational trauma, fascist politics, and current anti-imperialist and pro-democracy activism.

Gina Apostol is the first Filipino novelist to be awarded the Dan and Maggie Inouye Chair in Democratic Ideals at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has written five novels, among them Insurrecto, named by Publishers Weekly one of the Ten Best Books of 2018, and her most recent, La Tercera, out in 2023. She has been awarded the Rome Prize, the PEN/Open Book Award, and two Philippine National Book Awards. She grew up in Tacloban, Leyte, in the Philippines and lives in New York and western Massachusetts.
