Philippine Studies Collection Subject Guide

The Philippine Studies Collection at the University of Hawai’i is one of the largest Philippine collections outside of the Philippines. Searching for Philippine-related materials can be overwhelming, but a detailed Philippine Studies Subject Guide created by our Philippine Studies Librarian can assist you with your research needs. This guide lists various databases, resources on books, journals, websites, bibliographies, as well as other topics that students and scholars have requested for their courses. Please view the following link to access this guide, Philippines – Research Guides at University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Thousands of materials are added to the collection annually including open-access digital materials. If you have Philippine-related material requests (books, journals, videos,  music, etc), please send an email to asiaref@hawaii.edu.

History

The University of Hawaii’s Library’s Philippine Collection began when the Asia Collection of the East-West Center was transferred to the University of Hawai’i in 1970. Recognizing the contribution and growing Filipino population in 1975, a Hawai’i State Senate Resolution mandated the founding of the Center for Philippine Studies at the University of Hawai’i. The creation of a librarian faculty position specializing in Philippine Studies was included in this new endeavor. The goals were to build up library resources and provide reference service, as well as, to coordinate with other institutions. This decision resulted in one of the largest Philippine collections in the United States. The collection’s aim is to provide the research needs of the UHM students, faculty and staff, but it also attracts community patrons and Philippine Studies’ scholars both nationally and internationally who are conducting studies of the country. Funding is provided by the University of Hawai’i, Center for Philippine Studies’ Endowments, donors such as former founding director of the Center for Philippine Studies Dr. Belinda Aquino, the Republic of the Philippines’ Office of Senator Loren Legarda, and our anonymous donors.
