Daily Manaʻo for Cohort Kumukahi August 2024 – Wednesday

Wednesday, August 14, 2024

While the second day of the week includes lots of talking and socializing with other people, the third day involves much more introspective writing time. We trace our many lineages of genealogies that shape us by mapping our moʻokūʻauhau, including family and intellectual lineages and even lessons that we’ve inherited. For all the visual learners in the building, we also have an exercise that allows us to visualize our pilina to one another in relation to a shared center, or a piko. Please excuse my messy bun in the photos, but the images below are before and after photos of the exercise, indicating how the participants are closer or farther from me (as the center) but still connected to one another through the linking of the orange rope.

One thing in particular that really stuck with me (and many others, I’m sure) throughout the day is something my co-worker Nick had said as we were going through our moʻokūʻauhau mappings. Quite beautifully and simply he said, “moʻokūʻauhau is an invitation to remember.” Such an important piece of wisdom! It’s also perhaps a good reminder that this work cannot be accomplished in just a day, but the invitation will always be there whenever we are ready to remember.

Mahalo again to our participant Christina for the real-time photos!

Before photo of exercise with participants equally spaced from the center.
After photo! Participants are now located at varying distances from the center as Kawehi asks them about their experience.
