UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Poepoe, Malaki 2025 Sunday 3/9 - Tuesday 3/18

Aloha mai kākou,
This past weekend, right before the start of our current anahulu, our team had the opportunity to visit Kahana in Koʻolauloa, Oʻahu. Of the many things I was glad to have seen and experienced there, seeing the moonrise was one of them! To honor the beauty of Kahana, let us turn to this ʻōlelo noʻeau:
Na kupa heʻe ʻĀhiu i ka laʻi o Kahana.
The native sons who surf in the ʻĀhiu wind in the peaceful land of Kahana.
Said in admiration of a native of Kahana, Oʻahu. In the days when Hiʻiaka traveled to Kahana as a woman, surfing was done there only by the chiefs. The ʻĀhiu is a well known wind of Kahana. —ʻŌN#2245
Because I was a visitor to this place where chiefs once surfed in the ʻĀhiu wind, the people and residents of Kahana that I met were my way of introduction to this particular ʻāina. In admiration of the kupa of Kahana, this ʻōlelo noʻeau allows me to further build my pilina to a place that has endured since the time of Hiʻiaka.
Anahulu Reflection:
Is there a place you have visited recently that contains stories that align with your experiences and first impressions of that area? What may have changed about this place over time—and what remains?
