Anahulu Hoʻēmi 6/27 – 7/5

UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻēmi June and July 2024 Thursday 6/27 - Friday 7/5

Aloha nō kākou,

Dear readers, I hope that you all are enjoying the warm hours of sunlight with the recent passing of the sun through the Alanui Polohiwa a Kāne during the summer solstice. The strong winds and light rains have brought so many rainbows to the morning and evening skies, and on the evening of Lāʻaukūkolu, I admired the approach of a rainbow during sunset in the above photograph. Due to the length of our days, I was able to watch the ānuenue appear, disappear, and re-form for about an hour as the clouds moved with the Moaʻekū tradewinds of ʻEwa.

Just as the winds and rains of Mānoa create beautiful and often incredibly vibrant ānuenue in our valley, so too do the ānuenue appear across the plains of ʻEwa when the conditions align. While we may or may not always have the time to sit or look outside and notice our environments, the appearance of rainbows and other hōʻailona are reminders to appreciate the beauty of being where we are at that particular moment.

Anahulu Reflection:

The conditions for my own on-campus presence recently have been aligning in such a way that I’ve had opportunities to (often very briefly) say hello to many folks that I don’t usually have the chance to see. Because all of our individual lives are so busy and are only getting busier, these brief moments of wholesome and grounding interactions truly light up my otherwise windy and rainy days.

How are you experiencing the light of ānuenue in your life? Do you notice moments of literal light during some of the longest days of the year, or perhaps the smile of a loved one when you arrive back home? What other hōʻailona do you notice greeting you?
