UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻonui, Nowemapa 2024 Friday 11/1 - Sunday 11/10

Aloha e nā hoa heluhelu,
With the new moon cycle, the rainbows of Mānoa have been beautiful each morning, and every chance I get, I’m standing in the misty rains and warm sunlight, or sharing cups of tea with my co-workers in our cozy office.
E kuʻu hoa, let’s return to Hoʻoulumāhiehie’s Ka Moʻolelo o Hiʻiakaikapoliopele as we read some of the last few passages that take place in the area of Kamōʻiliʻili:
I nei ʻike ʻana aku o Lohiʻau i ua moʻo nei e hele iho ana a poʻipū ma luna o lākou nei, ua hea akula ia i ka wahine, iā Hiʻiaka, “ʻAuhea ʻoe, e Hiʻi! Eia ka make o kākou lā, ke kū mai nei i luna ponoʻī o kākou. Pehea kākou e pakele ai?”
“E pili mai ʻolua ma hope oʻu, a mai hoʻokoʻo iki ʻolua i ko ʻolua pili ʻana mai,” wahi a Hiʻiaka i pane mai ai.
I lawa nō a pau kēia mau ʻōlelo a ia nei, ʻo kona hiu aʻela nō ia i ka pāʻū o ia nei, puehu liʻiliʻi ana ke kino o Kamōʻiliʻili i ʻō i ʻaneʻi.
When Lohiʻau saw this moʻo coming to pounce on them, he called to his wife, Hiʻiaka, “Oh Hiʻi! Here comes our death, right upon us. How will we escape?”
“You two, stay close behind me, and do not move at all,” Hiʻiaka responded.
No sooner had these words been spoken than she flicked out her pāʻū, and the body of Kamōʻiliʻili was blasted to bits and scattered all over.
Although I must make the disclaimer that I am not an expert in identifying or reading clouds, in the above photo, the single cloud in the bright blue sky takes on the appearance of a cloud body scattered by an unseen force like the wind, or perhaps other weather patterns. With the passing storms, there have also been interesting cloud shapes that perhaps only appear in certain conditions, or with the passing of Hiʻiaka as she travels with her companions.
Anahulu Reflection:
In the name Kamōʻiliʻili is the term ʻiliʻili, which refers to small stones and pebbles and also the actions of piling and overlapping. In addition to the scattered body of Kamōʻiliʻili and the clouds in the sky, are there other instances where the ʻāina shows us other examples of ʻiliʻili?
