Anahulu Hoʻēmi 1/19 – 1/28/2025

UHM NH Updates: Anahulu Hoʻēmi, Ianuali 2025 Sunday 1/19 - Tuesday 1/28

A photo of the open sky during the ʻOlepau sunrise with the half-moon among thin clouds colored deep orange by the rising sun.

Aloha mai nō kākou,

Mahalo nui to everyone who gave their time, energy, and love to our office’s annual Hawaiʻi Kuʻu Home Aloha Summit, which concluded last week! Pictured above is the mahina during the sunrise on the morning of our keynote. The conversation that night was much-needed medicine—mahalo piha to the many hands that supported my coworker ʻĀnela and I as we co-moderated the keynote discussion with Norma Wong, our wonderfully insightful guest speaker. I could truly feel the presence of our kūpuna and moʻopuna with us as we were in conversation with one another, and I feel forever changed after having the opportunity to gaze upon new “horizons” with Norma and peer into the clarity of her sight.

One of the many seeds of wisdom that I gathered that night is from Norma’s final, off-stage advice to ʻĀnela and I: Don’t hesitate.

As I learn to trust more in myself (especially when I’m not perfect), it’s easier not to hesitate or overthink when guided by the faith that my kūpuna have in me and our future generations. Just as the colors of the sunrise surround and embrace the rising moon, our kūpuna guide us as we rise.

Anahulu Reflection:

In your own life, when might you find yourself hesitating before taking a “leap” or starting something new? Can you also think of instances when you were safely guided by your predecessors?
