Daily Manaʻo for Cohort Kumukahi August 2024 – Tuesday
Tuesday, August 13, 2024
Our second day of the cohort is also ʻāina day, and this day happened to fall upon yet another ʻOle moon. But we were still very productive at Ka Papa Loʻi ʻo Kānewai, where some of us in my group fertilized the loʻi by gathering fallen leaves from the many kukui trees, and others yet of us had the opportunity to hehihehi while shoulder-to-shoulder with one another in the loʻi named Waiaka. Because of the depth of Waiaka, that loʻi is one of my favorite to walk in, especially since the lepo (thick mud) is so very soft (although the rocks aren’t)! As we stepped back onto the kuāuna (banks), we remarked in amazement at how the mud coated our legs like new shoes!
This day also marked the first time that Kamakani and I had the honor and privilege of co-facilitating with Makanalani and Kawehi, respectively (and lovingly). In our Pilina Circles, as I would come to find out as Kamakani and I talked afterwards, we each had brought with us meaningful mele (poems and songs), bringing with us our ancestors. Hoʻomaikaʻi to our entire team for growing braver and safer spaces! And mahalo nō hoʻi to the ʻāina of Kānewai for also being with us in our experiences!
In the afternoon, we had a discussion all together back in the hālau, and this time together was an opportunity to talk more about the principles we had been learning about. To close our conversation for the day, we had some really beautiful thoughts shared about kuleana and what it means to bear the weight of doing what needs to be fulfilled.
Also, mahalo nui e Christina Higa for noticing that we needed a photographer and for being willing to take up that kuleana even as a participant!
