Okinawan Dance

Yukie Shiroma was born in Hawai‘i and raised in San Francisco. Since returning home in 1980, she has studied modern dance with Betty Jones, and Okinawan dance with Cheryl Nakasone for over 40 years. In 1987 she received her MFA degree in dance from the University of Hawaiʻi and the same year started the dance program at Mid-Pacific Institute where she served as Dance Director for 20 years. In 2006 she received an Individual Artist Fellowship Award from the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. She is Artistic Director of mask physical theatre company, Monkey Waterfall, and currently teaches Okinawan dance courses in the Dance Program with the UHM Department of Theatre and Dance.
