Biography

Mezzo-soprano Maya Sypert (formerly Maya Hoover) is a professional classical singer who has performed in operas, concerts, and recitals throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, and China. She has performed regularly with pianist José Meléndez for over 25 years in innovative programs highlighting Latin American, Spanish, and other outstanding lesser-known works. She holds a Doctor of Music degree in Voice Performance and Literature with a minor in Music Education from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, and a Bachelor of Music degree with a minor in Italian Language and Literature from Binghamton University. She is a roster artist with Wade Artist Management, and currently serves as Associate Chair and Undergraduate Chair of the Music Department at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Her teaching interests include vocal technique, art song repertoire (particularly Italian, Spanish, and Latin American), and the art of collaboration.
