Indo-Pacific Affairs Internship Award Showcase and Information Session

On February 12, 2024, we gathered at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to celebrate the achievements of two of our 2023 Indo-Pacific Internship Award recipients, to learn about their experiences, and to answer questions about applying for the 2024 Indo-Pacific Affairs Internship Program, which provides $4,000 stipends to support undergraduate and graduate students at UH Mānoa who wish to pursue relevant internships. This session featured informational presentations by representatives from the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, and the two students shared their internship experiences:

Peter Bennett interned with the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies during Summer 2023. He is a graduate student pursuing an M.A. in Asian Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is interested in Japanese politics and Russo-Japanese relations. He holds a B.A. in History from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and an A.A. in Liberal Education from Normandale Community College.

Artinlee Masiuriulmal interned with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders during Summer 2023. He is an undergraduate student pursuing a B.B.A. in Entrepreneurship at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is interested in issues related to the Pacific Islands, and he is from Falalop Woleia, part of the Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. He holds a Third-Year Certificate of Achievement in General Business, an A.A. in Business Administration, and an A.A. in Liberal Arts from the College of Micronesia-FSM.

The College of Social Sciences, the School of Pacific and Asian Studies, the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, and the Center for Indo-Pacific Affairs at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa partnered to launch this program in 2022 with the support of Congressional funding. The award stipends are intended to make valuable professional development opportunities more accessible to undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
