One of the ways to enhance your on-campus living experience is by joining a Residential Learning Program. Student Housing Services is partnering with academic departments and/or student services offices to establish Residential Learning Programs that foster a greater connection between the in-class learning experience and the out of class experience. Research has shown that residential learning experiences provide positive impacts on student satisfaction, connection to the university and academic performance. Ultimately, we believe these communities can help you develop long lasting connections while also focusing on your academic aspirations.
Students with similar majors or interests can live together on selected residential floors. Residents will be able to study together, work together and learn from each other. Hall staff will focus programming elements to connect classroom learning with your out of class experience.

Who can be a part of the Residential Learning Programs?

Interest-based residential learning programs are open to all student residents. For academic-based residential learning programs, a student must be part of that school/college/major.

How to apply for Residential Learning Programs
Applying to be part of a Residential Learning Program is easy! For every program except the Honors RLP, simply select the program on your housing application.

Shidler College of Business

Connect with others with similar interests in a career in education. Enjoy community service projects at schools and exposure to faculty and staff in the College of Education.

Health Professions

Engage in programming and activities designed to help you explore further within the health professions by forming close relationships with faculty and staff in the health majors.

Travel Industry Management

Expand your experience in the Travel Industry Management Program by meeting with fellow students and attend activities and other programs designed to further your academic, personal, and social success.

College of Engineering

Engage in academic and networking activities led by UHM College of Engineering faculty, staff, and student leaders. Learn about the different areas of engineering, discover their academic focus, and connect with other engineering students and faculty.

Honors

This program is only for students already admitted into the Honors program. Students in the program reside with other students that are ready to meet the challenges of a stimulating and rigorous program.

Hale Pa‘akea

Open to all students, this RLP is designed for those interested to look deeper into issues and experiences facing Native Hawaiians in higher education.

Filipino Language and Culture

Open to all students, participants have a chance to understand and appreciate Filipino language and culture through a variety of programming, language exchange, lectures, and cultural events.

Japanese Language and Culture

Open to all students, participants have a chance to meet other students and make new friends who share similar interests in Japanese language and culture.

Rainbow Village

Open to all students, this community is intended to be a supportive and learning environment for persons of any sex, gender identity, or expression.

Alice Ball

Open to all students, this learning program recognizes the accomplishments of notable UHM alumna Alice Ball and is for those who are interested in learning about and engaging in black issues within Hawai‘i, the United States, and the world.
