What is Federal Work Study?

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a type of federal financial aid awarded to eligible undergraduate and graduate students. FWS allows you to earn your award through part-time employment.

Through FWS, you can:

• Earn your award in a part-time job

• Work on campus at the University of Hawaiʻi or with approved non-profit community service agencies

• Participate in programs such as the FWS America Reads Program, a literacy tutoring initiative administered by the Mānoa Career Center

• Gain valuable work experience while earning income

• Benefit from the fact that FWS earnings are not counted as income on future financial aid applications

Who is eligible?

To participate in the Federal Work Study Program at UH Mānoa, you must:

• Have been offered a FWS award for the current academic year/semester by UH Mānoa Financial Aid Services

• Meet eligibility requirements for part-time student employment

• Complete the FWS Orientation before using your award

How do I get started?

1. Check your award in the MyUH Portal to confirm that you have a Federal Work Study offer.

2. Make sure you meet part-time student employment requirements.

3. Complete the FWS Orientation (required for first-time FWS recipients).

4. After the orientation, you can search and apply for FWS positions through the student employment system.
