Service Learning

Service Learning is a method by which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community. Check out the different programs that are available in Hawai’i below.

A

American Samoa Community College – Service Learning is pedagogy where students share their knowledge from the classroom with people in the community.

B

Bringham Young University – The Bridge is designed to cater to both faculty and students in order to initiate and sustain Service Learning on the BYU-Hawai'i campus and within the local Windward and North Shore communities.

Chaminade University – Service Learning is a method by which students learn through active participation in thoughtfully organized service conducted in and meeting the needs of the community.

East West Center – Furthering the East-West Center’s commitment to promote a stable, peaceful and prosperous Asia Pacific community, this course aims to help EWC students develop their service-learning studies and leadership skills through local community service.

Guam Community College – The CCE’s mission is “to enhance student educational experiences through the integration of academic study with active service in the community, while encouraging civic involvement, community awareness and responsible leadership.”

Hawai'i Community College – The Ola’a Community Center is the focal point for bringing people together. No matter what your age, culture, or gender, each one of you is a part of this community and has something to offer.

Honolulu Community College – Service Learning combines service to the community with student learning in a way that improves both the student and the community. (HCC Online Catalog)

Kapi’olani Community College – Service Learning is a teaching and learning method in which students provide meaningful service in the community to help them better understand what they are learning in their college courses.

Kaua’i Community College – Kaua'i Community College is situated on the island of Kaua'i, the northernmost and oldest of the major Hawaiian islands.

Leeward Community College – One of LCC’s primary missions is to assist our students with achieving their educational goals. One method we are using to accomplish this is providing students with opportunities to engage in Service Learning.

Maui Community College – Service Learning is more than just merely volunteering; it provides a level of critical thinking not obtained through regular volunteerism.

Northern Marianas College – Service Learning provides students an opportunity to extend their academic learning through practical service experience with a community agency.

University of Hawai'i at Hilo – Service Learning is an educational approach that fosters civic responsibility through active participation in organized service that meets community needs.

University of Hawai'i at Mānoa – Since 1994, the UH Mānoa Service Learning Program has worked with students, faculty, and members of the community.

University of Hawai'i at West O'ahu – The UHWO Service-Learning Program works in partnership with community agencies, organizations, and individuals to provide UHWO students with opportunities to enrich their education through extended and reflective service in their community/ies.

Windward Community College – Service Learning is an option in which students can earn partial course credit in designated courses at Windward Community College.
