Graduate Degrees
Master of Science in Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences
Research Masters | Thesis | Plan A
The Master of Science prepares a student for further learning and development of knowledge. Students will often advance to a Ph.D. or enter into careers as researchers and technicians. It requires a submission of a written thesis.
Master in Plant and Soil Studies
Coursework Masters | Non-Thesis | Plan B
The Master in Plant and Soil Studies prepares students to enter the advanced workforce, with careers in education, agribusiness, extension service, and other agricultural-related occupations. The degree is does not prepare students to advance into higher level of learning and knowledge development, such as a PhD. The degree does not require a written thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy in Tropical Plant and Soil Science
PhD | Dissertation
A Doctorate in Philosophy prepares students to develop significant and original knowledge within and beyond their field of study. Graduates will often take on leadership role in research in academic, government, or private institutions. The degree is globally recognized and awarded in recognition of a significant and original scholarly contribution to the candidate’s field.
Continuing Education
Students interested in continuing their learning and education but not seeking a degree should enroll in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Outreach College. The Outreach College offers a diversity of classes and programs that are perfect for keeping you engage in the vast knowledge that humanity has discovered.

As agricultural production systems face increasingly complex challenges, the integration of multiple disciplines becomes essential. Our graduate program in Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences provides a comprehensive education in this field. Our curriculum is designed to cultivate problem-solving skills that integrate diverse approaches, including molecular, biochemical, physiological, chemical, genetic, and ecological methods.
