Botany Graduate Student Research Awards

The School of Life Sciences offers several research and travel awards for graduate students made possible through donations and endowments from alumni and former faculty. Requests for proposals are circulated early each spring semester. Awards are made once each year by a selection committee appointed by the Director of the School of Life Sciences. Winona Pi’ilani Char Scholarship

College : UHM – College of Natural Sciences

Department : Botany

Inception Date : Sep 30, 2005

Description : Winona Pi’ilani Char was a noted botanist in Hawai’i who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 57 on December 1, 2004. She received her undergraduate degree in botany in 1970 and her master’s degree in botanical science in 1983, both from UH Manoa. Her lifelong focus was on conserving Native Hawaiian species throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Winona is survived by her mother Doris “Masayo” Char; brothers George Char and Garrick Char; and sisters Denise Moffitt and Arlynn Char. Her mother and sisters are establishing this fund to honor Winona Char’s life and her great efforts in conservation of native Hawaiian plants. It is their hope that students who receive the Winona Pi’ilani Char Endowed Scholarship will be inspired by her life story and will be inclined to set up similar funds to benefit botany students when they are able.

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to support students pursuing a degree in botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa College of Natural Sciences, with a strong preference for students of Native Hawaiian descent. Preference shall also be given to students focusing of Conservation Biology, Ecology, and Systematics.

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the College of Natural Sciences
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the Botany
  • The prospective recipient should have the emphasis or intent to specialize in Preference shall also be given to students focusing of Conservation Biology, Ecology, and Systematics.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time or part-time
  • The prospective recipient must be of Preference given to Native Hawaiian descent.
  • The prospective recipient should have Some financial need
  • The prospective recipient should have 3.0 or above
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Undergraduate or Graduate
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of Botany
  • The purpose of this Fund is The purpose of this fund is to support students pursuing a degree in botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa College of Natural Sciences, with a strong preference for students of Native Hawaiian descent. Preference shall also be given to students focusing of Conservation Biology, Ecology, and Systematics.

Hau’oli Mau Loa Fellows

Inception Date : May 01, 2019

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to provide graduate assistantships to students pursuing a Master’s degrees in Botany at the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Funds shall be used for student salary, fringe benefits, supplies and professional development related expenses, and for, but are not limited to, costs associated with attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc).

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time or Part-time.
  • The prospective recipient should have Minimum GPA of 3.0 throughout the term of the assistantship.
  • The prospective recipient must be a graduate of State of Hawai’i high school graduates, preferred.
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Graduate.
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of botany.
  • The prospective recipient should also have demonstrated the following preferences in no order: a) has a track record of supporting Hawaii?s environment? b) leadership potential (academic, athletic, extracurricular, and/or professional); and c) demonstrates a commitment to pursuing and attaining a long term career in environmental resources management in Hawaiʻi.

Beatrice Krauss Fellowship Fund in Botany

College : UHM – College of Natural Sciences

Inception Date : Jul 22, 1993

Description : This scholarship fund was established in honor of Beatrice Krauss by her friends and associates to acknowledge her many contributions to Hawaii.

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to assist students majoring in Botany at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Natural Sciences. Preference shall be given to students whose emphasis is Ethnobotany.

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time
  • The prospective recipient should have Some degree of financial need, not necessarily defined by federal guidelines.
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Graduate.
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of Botany with preference to students whose emphasis is Ethnobotany or who intends to pursue a career or research in the field of Ethnobotany.

Charles H. Lamoureux Fellowship in Plant Conservation Fund

Inception Date : Nov 02, 2000

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to provide fellowships to assist graduate students in their research endeavors in the Department of Botany, College of Natural Sciences, University of Hawai`i at Manoa.

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the Department of Botany.
  • The prospective recipient should have the emphasis or intent to specialize in preference shall be given to students studying in the conservation of native Hawaiian plants.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time.
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Graduate
  • The prospective recipient should have the following special circumstances recipients must be conducting or proposing substantial research in plant conservation and/or be focusing on plant conservation as a career. Research proposal will be judged on the following: 1) scientific merit of the proposal; 2) Feasibility of the proposal and 3) Financial need as outlined in the budget of the proposal.

Clifford Smith Endowed Fellowship

Inception Date : Dec 01, 2013

Purpose : The purpose of this Fund is to provide fellowships to assist graduate students who are pursuing a degree in Botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa College Natural Sciences in any aspect of lichen biology or evolution. Funds may be used for costs associated with attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc.), and /or to attend national meetings, purchase research equipment and supplies, and any other costs associated with their studies.

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time.
  • The prospective recipient must be of preference to Native Hawaiian ancestry as self-identified (as long as it is not determined to be contrary to future state and/or federal law).
  • The prospective recipient should have Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Graduate.
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of botany in any aspect of lichen biology or evolution.
  • There is a number and amount of award shall be determined by the selection committee based on the availability of funds. Recipients are eligible for fellowship renewal so long as all criteria are met.
  • The prospective recipient should have the following special circumstances if there is no qualified recipient based on the eligibility criteria within a reasonable number of years, the Chair of the Department of Botany may use the funds to provide fellowships to assist graduate students studying any field in the Department of Botany.

Harold and Elizabeth St. John Scholarship

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to support students pursuing a degree in botany in the Department of Botany, College of Natural Sciences at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Funds shall be used for costs associated with attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc).

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the Department of Botany.
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time.
  • The prospective recipient should have some degree of financial need, not necessarily determined by federal guidelines.
  • The prospective recipient should have Satisfactory academic progress toward degree as determined by the selection committee.
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Undergraduate (junior or senior) or Graduate.
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of botany, with preference given to students who demonstrate or express interest in systematic botany.

The prospective recipient must be junior or senior level for undergraduates.

Torrey-Degener-Rock Scholarship Endowed Fund

Inception Date : Jun 07, 2000

Description : This scholarship was named by the donor in honor of Ray Ethan Torrey, Otto Degener and Joseph Rock, three outstanding botanists of this country, in the hope that future recipients will be reminded and inspired by the honorees’ outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of botany.

Purpose : The purpose of this fund is to encourage and support promising students involved in the study of botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.

CRITERIA

  • The prospective recipient should be attending classes at UH Manoa
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the College of Natural Sciences
  • The prospective recipient should be a student of the Botany
  • The prospective recipient must be enrolled Full-time
  • The prospective recipient should have the level of Undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate
  • The prospective recipient should have a major of Botany
  • The prospective recipient should also have Outstanding scholastic achievement.
  • The purpose of this Fund is The purpose of this fund is to encourage and support promising students involved in the study of botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
  • The prospective recipient must be Junior or Senior for Undergraduate level

Dr. Lani Stemmerman Endowed Fellowship

This endowed scholarship is established in memory of Dr. Lani Stemmermann by the University of Hawai’i Professional Assembly to provide support to graduate students pursuing their Ph.D. degree in Botany at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa College of Natural Sciences.

Specifically, the Stemmermann Fellowship is intended to be used for travel, research, supplies, housing, and other such costs associated toward the completion of studies. Funds are not intended to cover tuition expenses.

To be eligible, recipients must:

  1. Be enrolled full-time or part-time graduate students pursuing their Ph.D. degree in Botany at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa College of Natural Sciences.
  2. Demonstrate some degree of financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.
  3. Preference will be given to those studying conservation of native Hawaiian plants.
