On February 19, ELP kicked off its semester-long 30th Anniversary celebration with a Trivia Night event attended by 30 participants, including WSRSL students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the program.
The event featured three rounds of trivia questions related to environmental law, popular culture, and ELP history. The winning team of David Kimo Frankel ‘92, Maxx Phillips ‘13, and Marti Townsend ‘05 correctly answered twenty-five out of thirty questions, including the number of hearts an octopus has (three) and the year the National Environmental Law Moot Court Team won the national championship (1999).
“After sober reflection and de novo review, we realize that much of the trivia involved moot questions that proved to be a nuisance,” Frankel joked. “We apologize for our abuses of discretion throughout the evening.”
The team of Tom Hughes, Bekah Ray ‘21, Diego Rivera ‘23, and Miranda Steed ‘19 came in second place with a score of twenty-one out of thirty.
“Despite being in a pandemic, ELP’s Trivia Night was a blast,” Steed said. “It was fun seeing many familiar faces and testing our knowledge of both the program and environmental law. Hats off to the RAs for pulling off such an awesome event!”
Special guest and ELP founder Casey Leigh (Jarman) also attended, sharing many of Steed’s sentiments. Leigh described the event as “great fun” and noted that she is already “look[ing] forward to the next one.”
Noticeably absent, however, were the reigning champions from ELP’s first trivia night held last November. The team of Cat Barbour ‘22, Tara Buckley ‘20, Patricia Sendão ‘22, and Turner Wong ‘22 released a good-natured statement promising to return for a heavyweight showdown in the future: “Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, we could not defend our crown. However, we fully intend to compete in the next event and take back what’s rightfully ours.”
Despite continuing his losing streak (enough said), ELP Director David Forman ’93 added that he is “also looking forward to whatever ELP RAs Joe Udell ’22, Hoku Chun ’21, Tehani Louis-Perkins ’22, and Hannah Caddle ’22 have cooked up for us!” Forman noted that “the good-natured banter was only slightly less than what Cameron Black ’08 absorbed with grace—while “dishing” out his fair share, of course—during our inaugural effort in partnership with the Evening Part-Time program last semester.” Our Director concluded by saying that “Kimo’s hats, Marti’s wide smiles (and, perhaps, thinly veiled embarrassment?), along with Maxx’s Hilo-based exuberance, were totally heartwarming.”
ELP’s 30th anniversary celebration will continue on March 18 with a Community Guide to Hawaiʻi Land Conservation and a conference on April 9.
