ELP Hosts “Legal Fellows and ELP” for the Evening Part-Time Program

October 16, 2018 – In partnership with William S. Richardson School of Law’s Evening Part-Time Program (“EPT”), the Environmental Law Program hosted “Legal Fellows and ELP” on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. As a part of the EPT program’s weekly “Evening Programming,” ELP highlighted the many fellowship opportunities available to students. ELP Dean Antolini (“Dean A”) gave opening remarks and introductions alongside Professor Wallsgrove, and Jarman fellows, Miranda Steed, ’19 and Emily DeVille, ’20.  The program featured a panel of current and past legal fellows involved in a variety of environmental law work.  These panelists included:

  • Kathryn Stanaway ʻ17, DOFAW Law Fellow, Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife
  • Todd Tashima ‘17, Legal Fellow, Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR)
  • David Sakoda ‘10, Marine Law Specialist, Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources
  • Ian Garrod ‘17, Legal Fellow, Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE)

These legal fellowships are full time jobs affixed in state and local agencies.  These externally funded positions often serve as early career launch pads for recent graduates.  Inversely, the legal fellows offer the agencies legal expertise and experience.  In some cases, these positions become permanent as a result of its success.

Sharing their day-to-day responsibilities, the legal fellows shared about upcoming programs and legislative efforts.  As successful law school graduates, the panel shared both legal, career, and practical advice to interested students.  Current students learned what classes and skills were most directly applicable to the fellows’ current careers.  Ultimately, the legal fellows and the ever-encouraging Dean A reinforced that passion, interest, and a background can all amount to landing your dream job!
