25th Annual Hawai`i Conservation Conference

On July 24-26, 2018 faculty, alumni and students from the William S. Richardson School of Law attended and participated in the 25th Annual Hawai`i Conservation Conference. This years theme was Ulu Ka Lālā I Ke Kumu: From a Strong Foundation Grows an Abundant Future – Building upon our strong base of biocultural stewardship and utilizing innovative science to support an environmentally and culturally rich future.

Alumni, Lea Hong (Hawaiian Islands State Director at The Trust for Public Land) and Doug Cole (Executive Director of the North Shore Community Land Trust), participated in a forum discussing the past, present, and future of land conservation.  The forum addressed some of the successes as well as some challenges of land conservation in Hawai`i.

Professor Maxine Burkett co-authored a project titled “The Role of Climate Change and Ecosystem Services in the Migration Decisions of Marshallese Islanders to Hawai`i,” exhibited by Brittany Wheeler (Graduate School of Geography at Clark University).

A highlight from this year’s conference was the Gubernatorial Candidates Forum on the Environment.  In which Governor David Ige, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, Andria Tupola, and John Carroll were given the opportunity to speak about the action they will take to assure our biocultural resources and environment endure and flourish into the future.
