On Wednesday, April 12, 2017, ELP hosted a panel discussion about the new and exciting improvements in Hawaiʻi’s bicycling infrastructure and community.  Moderated by the law school’s very own cycling advocate and enthusiast, Professor Mark Levin, the event featured some of Hawai’i’s most-active bicycling experts.  Advocacy, Planning & Community Director of the Hawaiʻi Bicycling League, Daniel Alexander, shared some of the positive impacts that bicycling has on the community, including increased environmental awareness, health and wellness benefits, and community stewardship.  Justine Espiritu, Grants Manager of Bikeshare Hawaiʻi, explained the upcoming expansion of the bike share program in Honolulu this summer 2017, including 100 new bike docking stations with 1,000 bikes placed from Chinatown to Diamond Head.  

The City & County of Honolulu’s Complete Streets Administrator, Michael Packard, rounded out the panelists with exciting improvements in Hawaiʻi’s Complete Streets initiative.  The Complete Streets mission is to ” to create a comprehensive, integrated network of streets that are safe and convenient for all people whether traveling by foot, bicycle, transit, or automobile, and regardless of age or ability.”  Michael explained that the county is working on creating more protected bike lanes to not only increase bicycling, but reduce car traffic and advocate for overall greener-living in Hawaiʻi.  Mahalo nui to all attendees and panel participants for an inspiring event!
