Professor Maxine Burkett is featured in the March 2017 issue of Hawai‘i Business Magazine.  Professor Burkett is listed as one of the twenty people in Hawaii to watch over the next twenty years for their positive contribution to our State.  This is Hawai‘i Business Magazine’s eighth production of its “20 For The Next 20” list.  Individuals are chosen based on their “accomplishments, intelligence, charisma, leadership and passion,” and the anticipation that they will continue to break the mold in the future.

The article highlights Professor Burkett’s impressive contribution to the field of climate justice, which includes study on the topic of the disparate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.  Professor Burkett has been an important member of partnerships between the William S. Richardson School of Law and other national, state, and local agencies who are focused on climate adaptation.   

Bill Coy, director of the Omidyar Fellows Program, is quoted in the article describing Professor Burkett as having “a profound sense of her own responsibility as a leader.  She leads in a very powerful and quiet way. She has this combination of really fierce intelligence and extreme kindness that really brings out the best in other people.” Her students can attest to this statement, as she is frequently motivating law students to work on complicated issues and leading them in a way that gives them a sense of their own empowerment.
