The J Watumull Scholarship for the Study of India is now open!

The J. Watumull Scholarship is now open! This scholarship for the Study of India provides support for University of Hawai`i System undergraduate or graduate students with focused and well-developed proposals to study for a minimum of two months in India. The scholarship will support students in any field, including the professional schools and community college programs.

Library of Congress 2025 Junior Fellows Program

Applications are now being accepted for the Library of Congress 2025 Junior Fellows Program (JFP). This paidfull-timesummer internship enables the next generation of diverse cultural institution professionals to experience and interpret the collections, events, and services of the world’s largest library. We invite undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates from a variety of majors to apply for remote or onsite JFP internships. 

Topics for this year’s projects touch on history, journalism, music, maps, AI, and literature, as well as dive into a range of collection items from the Cold War era, rare Chinese books, cartographic items, Black press publications, Universal Music collections, and SO MUCH MORE!

2025 Critical Language Studies Scholarship Program
We are pleased to announce that the application is now open for the 2025 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program! We welcome American undergraduate and graduate students to apply now to learn a critical language next summer on a funded language and cultural enrichment program. The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks over the summer studying one of a dozen critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The program provides intensive language instruction and structured cultural activities designed to promote rapid language gains.

The Centre for Himalayan Studies, Shiv Nadar IoE, has announced the 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 for the time period 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 to 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱. The fellowship supports advanced research on the wider Himalayan region’s challenges and opportunities with a focus on the economy, borders and identities, the environment, and regional geopolitics of the region, including the Hindu Kush and the Karakoram.

Interested candidates may send in their CV, Ph.D. abstract, a research proposal of 2,500 words, a writing sample (published work accepted), and ideas for two issue briefs and commentaries of 50 words each.

Ph.D. holders, preferably with relevant experience, may apply for the fellowship. Fellows will receive a stipend of INR 50,000 per month for 12 months. Travel will be covered for two annual visits to the core team at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR.

Research output:
Monograph: 15,000-20,000 words by the end of the fellowship.
Quarterly: Four Commentaries of 800-1,000 words and four Issue Briefs of 2,500-3,000 words.

 2025 Modern South Asia Workshop (MSAW)

The South Asian Studies Council at Yale University’s MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies invites submissions for the 2025 Modern South Asia Workshop (MSAW). The MSAWis an annual, two-day convening which brings together advanced graduate students working on topics of current interest in modern South Asian Studies. The 2025 MSAW will be held at a location in South Asia from June 7-8, 2025. Travel, accommodation, and meals will be provided to all selected candidates for the duration of the Workshop in South Asia.

While we invite papers from all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, particular fields of focus for the 2025 MSAW include political sciencearchitectureanthropology, and history. We particularly welcome papers that promote interdisciplinary exchange across these fields. 

Eligibility: MSAW participation is restricted to advanced PhD students in the humanities and social sciences who have completed all coursework and fieldwork and are in the process of writing and submitting their dissertations at the time of the Workshop. Students in terminal master’s programs are not eligible to apply, nor are recent PhD graduates. Applicants located in South and Southeast Asia are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies 

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Buddhism Public Scholars Fellowships in Buddhist Studies places recent recipients of the PhD in professional positions at host institutions (museums, libraries, and publications) that present and interpret knowledge of Buddhist traditions. The selected Buddhism Public Scholars will use their academic knowledge and professional expertise to bolster the capacity of host institutions in the area of Buddhist art and thought in any tradition and location where Buddhism is practiced. We expect the Buddhism Public Scholars initiative to nurture mutually beneficial partnerships between scholars and hosts that will help disseminate knowledge of Buddhist traditions to broad publics.

CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship

The Multi-Country Research Fellowship is now accepting applications! This fellowship enables US scholars to carry out transnational research in countries across the network of Overseas Research Centers (ORCs), as well as other countries. 
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship has been running since 1993 and supports advanced research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences for US doctoral candidates, who are ‘all but dissertation,’ and scholars who have earned their PhD or terminal degree. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the US, at least one of which must host a participating ORC. ​Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams and independent scholars are also eligble to apply. Each award is $12,600. 
​Each year the highest ranking Multi-Country Fellowship applicant will receive an additional $1,000 toward travel expenses through the Mary Ellen Lane Multi-Country Travel Award. The award is named after CAORC’s founding director, Dr. Mary Ellen Lane.

The 2025 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA)

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) application for FY2025 is now available. This is an opportunity for doctoral students to conduct their dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Please visit and thoroughly review all information on the Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program webpage and the Federal Register Notice. Both will discuss eligibility, application, and process details. Please note, if selected, you must have reached doctoral candidacy (i.e., approved Form II by Graduate Student Services) by the start of the fellowship in order to accept the award.  

Important Information (Please Read):
The UH Mānoa application deadline is December 16, 2024, 11:59 PM Hawaii Time. All application materials including all reference letters, language evaluations, and affiliate letter, must be uploaded to the Fulbright-Hays DDRA application system (G6) by the UH Mānoa deadline in order to be considered. The published deadline on the Fulbright-Hays Program page is for the institution, not the student applicant. Late submissions will not be considered. If you plan to apply, students must immediately contact Kristen Connors in Graduate Division (connorsk@hawaii.edu) to verify your eligibility and to begin coordinating application materials.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program provides U.S. educators in the arts, social sciences and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. In summer 2025, seminars will be offered in:

  • Uruguay and Peru,
  • India, and 
  • Greece and Türkiye

Each thematic seminar features educational lectures and interactive cultural activities specifically designed for elementary, secondary, and postsecondary educators, including visits to local schools and organizations and meetings with education administrators, government officials, policymakers, teachers, and students. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new or enhance existing cross-cultural curricula for use in their U.S. classrooms and school systems. Sixteen educators participate in each seminar. The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Participants are responsible for covering the seminar cost-share of $750.

American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS)

American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) is now accepting applications from U.S. citizens for a range of fellowship opportunities, including Senior, Junior, and Pre-dissertation fellowships. All fellowships are for research involving Bangladesh and must be a minimum of two months, but no longer than twelve months pending available funding. These grants are supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. Scholars from all academic disciplines are eligible.

AIIS summer 2025 and Academic year 2025-2026 Language Programs – 
There are three different programs available

The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2025 and academic year 2025-2026 language programs. For summer Hindi we require the equivalent of one year of prior Hindi study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS or other funding if available at their institutions to cover the costs of the program. AIIS will award language fellowships, on a competitive basis, to academic year and fall semester students, which would cover all expenses for the program. Those eligible for these fellowships are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will have had the equivalent of at least two years of prior language study by September 2025. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025

The Department of History at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the History of South Asia. The time period and research focus are open. The successful applicant will teach one of our lower-division surveys inworld history (HIST 1500 or HIST 1510), as well as upper division and graduate courses in their area of specialization. The department seeks a highly motivated teacher and researcher to join a vibrant community of scholars at our Logan campus. Teaching is the primary focus of this position, and the faculty member will be responsible for teaching six courses per year, including courses taught in different modalities (face-to-face, online, and broadcast). The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Buddhism Public Scholars Fellowships in Buddhist Studies places recent recipients of the PhD in professional positions at host institutions (museums, libraries, and publications) that present and interpret knowledge of Buddhist traditions. The selected Buddhism Public Scholars will use their academic knowledge and professional expertise to bolster the capacity of host institutions in the area of Buddhist art and thought in any tradition and location where Buddhism is practiced.
