The J Watumull Scholarship for the Study of India is now open!
The J. Watumull Scholarship is now open! This scholarship for the Study of India provides support for University of Hawai`i System undergraduate or graduate students with focused and well-developed proposals to study for a minimum of two months in India. The scholarship will support students in any field, including the professional schools and community college programs.

The University of Hawaiʻi System Common Scholarship Application is now available online for the 2025-2026 academic year. This is a single application for several hundred different scholarships. Students attending any University of Hawaiʻi campus are encouraged to apply in order to be considered for system and campus scholarships.

FY24 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Short Term Program – A NON-POLITICAL PROJECT FUNDED BY THE US DEPT. OF EDUCATION – Narratives of Diversity Performed through Storytelling and Encoded in Historical Architectural Sites
A unique opportunity to join a study tour to India’s historical sites, learn its culture, collecting topic based materials, develop and disseminate teaching documents for K-12 Hindi learners.The program pays for all expenses of the study tour for participants. (Participants are not required to have a prior knowledge of Hindi but must be inclined to learn.)
Phase I comprises of a five online pre-study tour orientation/preparation sessions every weekend during December 2024- January 2025. Phase II involves the study tour to India (Feb-March 2025) and phase III will be held online in the weekend during April-June 2025 during which participants will finalize their teaching documents under the guidance of the Academic Director.

2024 AIIS Book Prize Competition
Studies, the American Institute of Indian Studies awards two prizes each year for the best unpublished book manuscript on an Indian subject:
- The Edward Cameron Dimock, JR. Prize in the Indian Humanities
- The Joseph W. Elder Prize in the Indian Social Sciences
A book subvention of $2500 is open to junior scholars who have received the PhD within the last eight years (2016 and after). This must be the first book by the author.

Counter Histories Fellowship
Counter Histories is an initiative supporting projects that creatively reframe the past to engage with urgent questions of the present and future. AIIS – Junior Fellowship Mentorship Program
The American Institute of Indian Studies has initiated a mentoring opportunity for AIIS Junior Fellowship applicants who do not have advisors at their universities with South Asia expertise.
If an applicant would like to use the mentoring opportunity for someone to read and comment on their proposal, they should send the proposal draft to the U.S. Director (aiis@uchicago.edu), with verification that applicant does not have advisor at their university with South Asia expertise. U.S. Director will pair mentors and mentees as closely as possible by field and area of interest.
Mentors have agreed to read two drafts, a preliminary one and a revised one based on mentor’s comments. The first draft submitted should not be an outline or notes. Mentees should review the helpful hints for proposals before submitting their first draft. Mentees are urged to honor this guideline and not ask for comments on further drafts.

School for International Training in India for a Professional Development Program
School for International Training is excited to offer a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of global public health, gender, and community action in an Asian context through their upcoming Professional Engagement Program in India: “Public Health, Well-being, and Community Action: Beyond Western Narratives of Gender and Sexuality. ” While designed for university faculty and study abroad advisors, this professional engagement program is open to anyone with a strong interest in these subjects or the region.

Library of Congress 2025 Junior Fellows Program
Applications are now being accepted for the Library of Congress 2025 Junior Fellows Program (JFP). This paid, full-timesummer internship enables the next generation of diverse cultural institution professionals to experience and interpret the collections, events, and services of the world’s largest library. We invite undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates from a variety of majors to apply for remote or onsite JFP internships.
Topics for this year’s projects touch on history, journalism, music, maps, AI, and literature, as well as dive into a range of collection items from the Cold War era, rare Chinese books, cartographic items, Black press publications, Universal Music collections, and SO MUCH MORE!

2025 Critical Language Studies Scholarship Program
We are pleased to announce that the application is now open for the 2025 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program! We welcome American undergraduate and graduate students to apply now to learn a critical language next summer on a funded language and cultural enrichment program. The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks over the summer studying one of a dozen critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship is now accepting applications! This fellowship enables US scholars to carry out transnational research in countries across the network of Overseas Research Centers (ORCs), as well as other countries.
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship has been running since 1993 and supports advanced research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences for US doctoral candidates, who are ‘all but dissertation,’ and scholars who have earned their PhD or terminal degree. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the US, at least one of which must host a participating ORC. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams and independent scholars are also eligble to apply. Each award is $12,600.
Each year the highest ranking Multi-Country Fellowship applicant will receive an additional $1,000 toward travel expenses through the Mary Ellen Lane Multi-Country Travel Award. The award is named after CAORC’s founding director, Dr. Mary Ellen Lane.

Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program
The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program provides U.S. educators in the arts, social sciences and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. In summer 2025, seminars will be offered in:
- Uruguay and Peru,
- India, and
- Greece and Türkiye
Each thematic seminar features educational lectures and interactive cultural activities specifically designed for elementary, secondary, and postsecondary educators, including visits to local schools and organizations and meetings with education administrators, government officials, policymakers, teachers, and students. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new or enhance existing cross-cultural curricula for use in their U.S. classrooms and school systems. Sixteen educators participate in each seminar. The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Participants are responsible for covering the seminar cost-share of $750.

AIIS summer 2025 and Academic year 2025-2026 Language Programs –
There are three different programs available
The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2025 and academic year 2025-2026 language programs. For summer Hindi we require the equivalent of one year of prior Hindi study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS or other funding if available at their institutions to cover the costs of the program. AIIS will award language fellowships, on a competitive basis, to academic year and fall semester students, which would cover all expenses for the program. Those eligible for these fellowships are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will have had the equivalent of at least two years of prior language study by September 2025. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Buddhism Public Scholars Fellowship
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Buddhism Public Scholars Fellowships in Buddhist Studies places recent recipients of the PhD in professional positions at host institutions (museums, libraries, and publications) that present and interpret knowledge of Buddhist traditions. The selected Buddhism Public Scholars will use their academic knowledge and professional expertise to bolster the capacity of host institutions in the area of Buddhist art and thought in any tradition and location where Buddhism is practiced. We expect the Buddhism Public Scholars initiative to nurture mutually beneficial partnerships between scholars and hosts that will help disseminate knowledge of Buddhist traditions to broad publics.
