Faculty News

JESSE KNUTSON

Jesse was a visiting professor in the month of June in the department of Civilizations of Asia and Africa at Sapienza: Università di Roma in the department of Civilizations of Asia and Africa. He also lectured at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” in May before heading to Rome. Four of Jesse’s latest research articles are in production, being published in various Festschrifts and edited volumes. His latest book manuscript, which interlaces case studies from across the entire history of Sanskrit poetry, and the political history inseparable from it, is under consideration with a major publisher. Finally, he is hard at work editing the Bloomsbury Cultural History of South Asian Literature vol. 1: Antiquity.  

PALLAVI GUPTA

In 2024, Pallavi Gupta published an article “Temporal geographies of premature death: Caste, law, and infrastructure in Swachh Bharat” in Political Geography. Based on her research, Gupta highlights the mutually reinforcing relationship between law and infrastructure that enables premature deaths of sewage and manual cleaning workers.

The University of Hawaiʻi System Common Scholarship Application is now available online for the 2025-2026 academic year. This is a single application for several hundred different scholarships.  Students attending any University of Hawaiʻi campus are encouraged to apply in order to be considered for system and campus scholarships.

SHAFR Grants & Membership

The society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) is dedicated to the scholarly study of the history of American foreign relations. As such, it promotes the “the study, advancement and dissemination of a knowledge of American Foreign Relations” through the sponsorship of research, annual meetings, and publications. SHAFR.org is an online platform for showcasing the activities of the society and an online resource for its members. AAS 2025 Film Expo

We are now accepting submissions for the AAS 2025 Film Expo, which will be held in conjunction with the AAS Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, March 13-16, 2025.

Through a partnership established with the AAS in 2011, the Annual Conference Film Expo is curated and organized by the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

We welcome the submission of films related to Asia produced by scholars and independent filmmakers. Criteria utilized in the selection process include timeliness, broad appeal to the scholarly community, and examples of new fieldwork. In considering your submission, please note that attendees viewing films may be seeking titles for classroom use or for their institutional libraries.

American Comparative Literature Association – Call for Proposals

Please consider submitting your paper proposal to “Comparing Hindi Literature: Then and Now in the World.” Bonus – in 2025, ACLA is hosting its annual conference online, which gives many of us all sorts of flexibility. The panel’s goal is to take a comprehensive view of Hindi literary and cultural texts in conversation with literary theory and literary traditions from around the world. Seminar papers that examine Hindi as a dynamic language engaged in a robust dialogue with local and global literary traditions in South Asian and non-South Asian languages are encouraged. We also want to use Hindi texts as a rich repository for critically assessing issues of caste, gender, sexuality, language politics, technology, translation studies, literary movements, aesthetics, literary theory, and literary history from a comparative perspective. Basically, anything Hindi is of interest to us!

Papers presented in the panel will be considered for a special journal issue on Hindi literature. Please consider sending your paper proposal, and also spread the word about the panel. It will be great to have students, and faculty  engage in a dialogue on Hindi literature

A unique opportunity to join a study tour to India’s historical sites, learn its culture, collecting topic based materials, develop and disseminate teaching documents for K-12 Hindi learners.The program pays for all expenses of the study tour for participants. (Participants are not required to have a prior knowledge of Hindi but must be inclined to learn.)

Phase I comprises of a five online pre-study tour orientation/preparation sessions every weekend during December 2024- January 2025. Phase II involves the study tour to India (Feb-March 2025) and phase III will be held online in the weekend during April-June 2025 during which participants will finalize their teaching documents under the guidance of the Academic Director.

2024 AIIS Book Prize Competition

Studies, the American Institute of Indian Studies awards two prizes each year for the best unpublished book manuscript on an Indian subject:

• The Edward Cameron Dimock, JR. Prize in the Indian Humanities
• The Joseph W. Elder Prize in the Indian Social Sciences

A book subvention of $2500 is open to junior scholars who have received the PhD within the last eight years (2016 and after). This must be the first book by the author.

Counter Histories is an initiative supporting projects that creatively reframe the past to engage with urgent questions of the present and future. AIIS – Junior Fellowship Mentorship Program

The American Institute of Indian Studies has initiated a mentoring opportunity for AIIS Junior Fellowship applicants who do not have advisors at their universities with South Asia expertise. 

If an applicant would like to use the mentoring opportunity for someone to read and comment on their proposal, they should send the proposal draft to the U.S. Director (aiis@uchicago.edu), with verification that applicant does not have advisor at their university with South Asia expertise. U.S. Director will pair mentors and mentees as closely as possible by field and area of interest.

Mentors have agreed to read two drafts, a preliminary one and a revised one based on mentor’s comments. The first draft submitted should not be an outline or notes. Mentees should review the helpful hints for proposals before submitting their first draft. Mentees are urged to honor this guideline and not ask for comments on further drafts.

2025 Critical Language Studies Scholarship Program
We are pleased to announce that the application is now open for the 2025 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program! We welcome American undergraduate and graduate students to apply now to learn a critical language next summer on a funded language and cultural enrichment program. The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks over the summer studying one of a dozen critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The program provides intensive language instruction and structured cultural activities designed to promote rapid language gains.

CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship

The Multi-Country Research Fellowship is now accepting applications! This fellowship enables US scholars to carry out transnational research in countries across the network of Overseas Research Centers (ORCs), as well as other countries. 
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship has been running since 1993 and supports advanced research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences for US doctoral candidates, who are ‘all but dissertation,’ and scholars who have earned their PhD or terminal degree. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the US, at least one of which must host a participating ORC. ​Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams and independent scholars are also eligble to apply. Each award is $12,600. 
​Each year the highest ranking Multi-Country Fellowship applicant will receive an additional $1,000 toward travel expenses through the Mary Ellen Lane Multi-Country Travel Award. The award is named after CAORC’s founding director, Dr. Mary Ellen Lane.

AIIS summer 2025 and Academic year 2025-2026 Language Programs – 
There are three different programs available

The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2025 and academic year 2025-2026 language programs. For summer Hindi we require the equivalent of one year of prior Hindi study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS or other funding if available at their institutions to cover the costs of the program. AIIS will award language fellowships, on a competitive basis, to academic year and fall semester students, which would cover all expenses for the program. Those eligible for these fellowships are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will have had the equivalent of at least two years of prior language study by September 2025. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.

The 44th Annual Hawaiʻi International Film Festival presented by Halekulani returns to the islands in October! The Fall Festival will feature an exciting slate of feature and short film premieres from around the world with a special focus on Asia, the Pacific, and Made-in-Hawaiʻi productions. The Robert H. N.
