I’m Not The River Jhelum – Film Screening & Director Talk with Q & A

Join CSAS for a screening of the award-winning feature film I’m Not The River Jhelum followed by a Q&A session with the director Prabhash Chandra (IN PERSON). 

About the Film

The film shows glimpses of the life of its young protagonist Afeefa living in Kashmir. On the
one hand, the film explores the suffocation and trauma experienced by Afeefa in her personal life
and, on the other hand, the film evokes the atmosphere of perpetual uncertainty and violence in
the milieu. In following the life of Afeefa, the film traces her growing understanding of the
forces at play in Kashmir, India.

About the Director
Prabhash Chandra is a filmmaker and artist known for his captivating narratives that artfully traverse both the realms of cinema and visual art. With a keen eye for raw authenticity and a minimalist aesthetic, his works confront societal truths, sparking introspection and dialogue. Through his art, he immerses viewers in poetic and philosophical realms, prompting reflection on existence and fleeting moments

AIPS Travel Grants

AIPS Conference Travel Grants fund travel to scholarly conferences for the presentation of papers or organization of panels on topics relevant to Pakistan Studies. AAAS Annual Conference 2025 – Call for Proposals!

The Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) invites Asian American Studies practitioners, scholars, teachers, artists, activists and beyond to engage broadly with the theme of re-orienting, from their various fields, disciplines and areas of expertise. The conference focus will be Re-Orienting Asian American Studies in a time of resurgent ethnonationalism and fascism. You must have a current and active AAAS membership in order to submit. Individual presenters of your panel/roundtable do not need to be members at the time of submission BUT will need to individually register for the 2024 conference by the early deadline of March 1 if they wish to be included in the program.

SHAFR Grants & Membership

The society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) is dedicated to the scholarly study of the history of American foreign relations. As such, it promotes the “the study, advancement and dissemination of a knowledge of American Foreign Relations” through the sponsorship of research, annual meetings, and publications. SHAFR.org is an online platform for showcasing the activities of the society and an online resource for its members. Queer Unschool South Asia

We are thrilled to invite applications for participation in Queer Unschool South Asia which is
scheduled to take place in Patan (Nepal) between November 16 – December 14 2024. The
program is envisioned and organised by the curator and writer Aziz Sohail with Promona
Sengupta and Anshika Varma as thought partners, and generously hosted by the independent
art space Kaalo.EkSeyEk, in programming collaboration with photo.circle.
What is the Queer Unschool?
The Queer Unschool invites practitioners from South Asia to gather for a month in a spirit of
conviviality, knowledge-sharing, and re-thinking regional imaginaries of our nation states. We
centre the experiences of the participants who hail and live in Bangladesh, India, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka – artists, activists and thinkers who are doing important and urgent work
in their contexts. Eight participants will be selected through this open call.

Michigan Journal of Asian Studies – Call for Submissions

The University of Michigan’s Michigan Journal of Asian Studies is an undergraduate-led journal that publishes peer-reviewed pieces relating to East, Central, South, Southeast, and West Asia. We are especially looking for work that relates to understudied contexts of Asian studies.

AAS 2025 Film Expo

We are now accepting submissions for the AAS 2025 Film Expo, which will be held in conjunction with the AAS Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, March 13-16, 2025.

Through a partnership established with the AAS in 2011, the Annual Conference Film Expo is curated and organized by the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

We welcome the submission of films related to Asia produced by scholars and independent filmmakers. Criteria utilized in the selection process include timeliness, broad appeal to the scholarly community, and examples of new fieldwork. In considering your submission, please note that attendees viewing films may be seeking titles for classroom use or for their institutional libraries.

A unique opportunity to join a study tour to India’s historical sites, learn its culture, collecting topic based materials, develop and disseminate teaching documents for K-12 Hindi learners.The program pays for all expenses of the study tour for participants. (Participants are not required to have a prior knowledge of Hindi but must be inclined to learn.)

Phase I comprises of a five online pre-study tour orientation/preparation sessions every weekend during December 2024- January 2025. Phase II involves the study tour to India (Feb-March 2025) and phase III will be held online in the weekend during April-June 2025 during which participants will finalize their teaching documents under the guidance of the Academic Director.

2024 AIIS Book Prize Competition

Studies, the American Institute of Indian Studies awards two prizes each year for the best unpublished book manuscript on an Indian subject:

• The Edward Cameron Dimock, JR. Prize in the Indian Humanities
• The Joseph W. Elder Prize in the Indian Social Sciences

A book subvention of $2500 is open to junior scholars who have received the PhD within the last eight years (2016 and after). This must be the first book by the author.

CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship

The Multi-Country Research Fellowship is now accepting applications! This fellowship enables US scholars to carry out transnational research in countries across the network of Overseas Research Centers (ORCs), as well as other countries. 
The Multi-Country Research Fellowship has been running since 1993 and supports advanced research in the humanities, social sciences, and allied natural sciences for US doctoral candidates, who are ‘all but dissertation,’ and scholars who have earned their PhD or terminal degree. Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the US, at least one of which must host a participating ORC. ​Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or as teams and independent scholars are also eligble to apply. Each award is $12,600. 
​Each year the highest ranking Multi-Country Fellowship applicant will receive an additional $1,000 toward travel expenses through the Mary Ellen Lane Multi-Country Travel Award. The award is named after CAORC’s founding director, Dr. Mary Ellen Lane.

AIIS summer 2025 and Academic year 2025-2026 Language Programs – 
There are three different programs available

The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its summer 2025 and academic year 2025-2026 language programs. For summer Hindi we require the equivalent of one year of prior Hindi study. For summer Urdu, we require the equivalent of one year of either Hindi or Urdu. We can offer courses at all levels, including beginning, in other Indian languages for the summer. Summer students should apply for FLAS or other funding if available at their institutions to cover the costs of the program. AIIS will award language fellowships, on a competitive basis, to academic year and fall semester students, which would cover all expenses for the program. Those eligible for these fellowships are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will have had the equivalent of at least two years of prior language study by September 2025. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.

Red White and Brown Media Presents “What’s in a Brown Name?”

It’s nearly impossible to disentangle South Asian Hindu names from legacies of caste and other social hierarchies. Names from across the diaspora, including Muslim, Christian and Buddhist names, hold their own power and history. In the upcoming virtual event What’s In a Brown Name? on Sept. 26, experts and journalists will bring light to the complicated history of South Asian names, unpack where we are now and reflect how people are decolonizing or adapting names.
