Yingwei (Joanna) Li

Assistant Professor

Dr. Yingwei (Joanna) Li received her master’s degree in condensed matter physics from Shanghai Normal University (Shanghai, China) in 2014 and joined Prof. Rongchao Jin’s group at Carnegie Mellon University in 2016. After earning her Ph.D. in chemistry in 2021, she worked as a postdoctoral associate at Harvard University in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology with Prof. Jarad A. Mason before joining the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 2024 as an assistant professor.

Our research focuses on applying the tools of synthetic chemistry and nanotechnology to address fundamental scientific challenges in energy and sustainable development. We are particularly interested in developing chemical strategies for designing ultrasmall nanoparticles and their assemblies to enhance catalytic, chiroptical, and photoluminescent properties. Our work also includes the development of nanocrystal frameworks, crystal-to-crystal structural transformations, and porous nanocrystals at various length scales.

As the first author, Dr. Li has published a lot of papers in many top journals, including Nature, Nature Chemistry, Chemical Society Review, Advanced Materials, Journal of the American Chemical Society, ACS NANO, Nature Communication, Science Advances, Chemical Science, etc.
