List of Age-Friendly Opportunities on Campus

Center on Aging:

  • Dementia-friendly garden / Memory Cafe: A free monthly, garden-based gathering for people living with memory loss and their care partners. Join us for community, onnection, and ʻāina-based activities in a safe, welcoming space and supported by trained student volunteers.
  • Community workdays: Join us every Second Saturday of the month for our community workdays. The monthly theme will focus on ʻāina-based activities, health and wellness, inclusive design, and enjoy teas from the māla.

Osher Life Long Learning Insititute (OLLI)::

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UH Manoa (OLLI-UHM) is a member-based learning community of adults age 50+. OLLI-UHM offers a program of non-credit, college-level courses, workshops, lectures, events, and other activities to encourage older individuals to engage their minds, enrich their lives, and serve the community.

John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM):

  • Mini-Medical School: The Dr. Rosita Leong Mini-Medical School on Healthy Aging is designed to prepare participants for the second half of their lives by delivering relevant scientific information on aging, similar to what our medical students learn, but tailored for public audiences. Since 2014, we have been offering all new courses each year in Spring and, because of popular demand, we repeat the Spring Course in the Fall. These courses are open to UH donors, UH alumni and community members (see Course Program for topics covered in the past courses and for the new courses for the current academic year). Videos of lectures and mini-talks are also posted on this website and on the Oceanic Time Warner cable channel “iAGE” at 1342/342.

Na Kupuna:

The Senior Citizen Visitor Program/Nā Kūpuna (SCVP/NK) program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) allows Hawai‘i residents aged 60 years or older to attend up to two courses at UHM free of charge without receiving credit.

Around 300 senior citizens attend classes at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa each semester through the Senior Citizen Visitor Program/Nā Kūpuna Program. They add to a rich campus culture and contribute from their life experience to the classroom setting.

The program has been administered by the SEED Office since 1995. Starting college at any age can feel overwhelming at times. We’ll guide you in taking some initial steps to help get you on your way. You can always reach out to us for help if you have any questions or just need some guidance along the way nakupuna@hawaii.edu, (808)-956-4642.

Ha Kupuna:

Hā Kūpuna is the National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders. It was established in September 2006 at the University of Hawaiʻi Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work. With the nation’s largest enrollment of Native Hawaiian students, the University of Hawaiʻi has as its mission the development and transmission of knowledge for the betterment of all Native Hawaiians. The National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders seeks to continue this commitment with a focus on improving the well-being of kūpuna by forging stronger collaborative relationships between the University and Native Hawaiian and gerontology communities.
